Otto Schuster, born in Bohemia in 1901, and Trude Schuster opened their restaurant “Csikós” shortly before Christmas 1950, on Andreasstrasse 7-9 in Düsseldorf’s old town. Already in 1948 the couple had found a place on the ground floor of the Altestadt 14 house with a 30 sqm shop and apartment, today’s “Kreuzherrenecke”. The couple offered “Trudls’ Chicken Soup” for consumption in the front area of the small room on the corner of Ursulinengasse and the extension of Ratinger Strasse. Business was good and the Schuster family opened a real restaurant, called “Zum Csikos”. The initial tavern quickly developed into a jazz pub and a popular meeting place for artists.

There was Hungarian cuisine, along with Bohemian beer and Slivovitz. A guest once wrote about the goulash soup: “After enjoying this fiery soup, the flames burst out of all openings in my body and I had to find out that I had no problems with annoying noses and ear-hairs for weeks. My glasses were steamed up, my eyes were watering and my voice was a little higher an hour or two later. ”

A combo with Dixieland Jazz entertained the audience. The artist Horst Geldmacher played with his friend Günther Scholl (* 1923) on the banjo and Günter Grass, on the washboard while studying at the art academy. There used to be facial control at the entrance. Grass had started his career as a bouncer here in 1952/53, collected the material for the novel Die Blechtrommel, and thus set a literary monument to his friends. The “Csikós” became the “Onion Cellar” and the innkeeper Otto Schuster the “Schmuh”. The trio disbanded when Grass moved to Berlin in late 1952. Another formation was a duo of violinist and double bass, which Schuster had brought from Austria.

1957/1958 Schuster had his regular guests captured in a picture. The painters Franz Witte and Germán Becerra, both representatives of the scene of the 1950s in the “Csikós”, captured the company in a large-format work. You can see fifty-five people, including Schuster himself, Ewald Mataré, Otto Coester, Bernhard Pfau and Günter Grass, other artists and architects, and representatives from politics and society.

Kay and Lore Lorentz came from the nearby Kom (m) ödchen. The artists Bruno Goller, Anatol, Hannes Loos, Hannes and Trude Esser, Peter Rübsam, Kurt Sandweg, Herbert Zangs were guests as well as the cabaret artist Ursula Herking and film stars like Hanne Wieder, Gert Fröbe and Elisabeth Flickenschildt. Theater greats like Gustaf Gründgens and Karl-Heinz Stroux celebrated here according to their ideas.

The “Csikós” was very soon one of the leading and visited by demanding, international audience. The artists with their half prizes, who liked to come because of the prizes, took the seats away from the fully paying guests. Otto Schuster met Franz Bobby Rethmeyer, who after the Second World War was a buffet in the house brewery “Zum Schlüssel”, and opened the “Kreuzherrenecke” with liquor (80% schnapps from Poland) in November 1954 in the corner pub as a meeting point for artists. The place was only called “Bobby” internally after the landlord took over the “Kreuzherrenecke” from Otto Schuster.
